Introduction

I have recently written a book about Henry Gaylord Wilshire, sometimes called The Millionaire Socialist. I  became fascinated with the man after coming across 35 boxes of letters at the UCLA Special Collections Library. I have always been interested in local history and people who are slightly unusual. I was a history major at UCLA. I also have a Ph.D. from Claremont Graduate University. I am more of an educator than an author but let us hope that there is room for educators in the world of literature. I have written three books on educational subjects. The Wilshire book is my first attempt at biography. It was a lot of fun as well as a lot of work. I kept finding new leads to Wilshire’s life that were not in the boxes of letters. More about the book on the next page. Since this is an introduction let me say that I am happily married, have three children and five grand children. I live in Pacific Palisades, California. I also have a great calico cat named Gwendolyn. She kept me company while I wrote the book. For fun I am a docent at the Getty Villa in Malibu, play a little jazz piano, and love to go to movies on Wednesday afternoons. I hope you get a chance to read a little of my book. I think you will find Wilshire a very interesting person and who knows, he may even remind you of someone you know. Let me know what you think about the book and Henry Gaylord Wilshire.
